Episode 18 - Loren Rosario-Maldonado - Cultural Shifts for Keynote Speakers

This week on The Shift, I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with my dear friend and mastermind buddy from the CQ Fellows 2023 cohort, Loren Rosario-Maldonado. Loren’s story is one of transformation, identity, and empowerment, and I’m so excited to share it with you all!

Loren’s journey began with an identity crisis—something that many of us can relate to at some point in our lives. For Loren, this crisis sparked a mission that has since evolved into a goal of motivating and elevating 5 million people across the globe. Yes, you read that right—5 million! She’s well on her way, and after hearing her speak, it’s easy to see why she’s already making such an impact.

In our conversation, Loren opened up about how cultural influences have shaped her. She shared how, growing up, she had to navigate two very different cultural worlds. On one side, there was her Anglo-American school environment, where privacy and achievement were central values. On the other side was her Latin community, where collaboration and openness were the norm. The constant need to switch between these two worlds—what we often refer to as “code-switching”—played a major role in shaping how she understands herself and others today.

Loren’s deep understanding of culture, which she continually enhances through her ongoing PhD studies, informs the way she prepares for and delivers her keynote speeches. She’s not just up there delivering a speech—she’s bringing her cultural intelligence (CQ) into the room, preparing to connect with very different groups across the USA. I found it so fascinating how intentional she is about supporting her audience in their own cultural shifts, whether she’s speaking to corporate teams, women’s leadership groups, or a conference full of emerging leaders.

We also spoke about her book, Becoming The Change: The Power of Cultural Intelligence, which I highly recommend. In it, Loren shares her personal story along with the insights she’s gathered from leading global teams and working in human resources. The book is a testament to the power of understanding our cultural influences and using that knowledge to become more empowered and empathetic leaders.

One thing that really stood out to me during our chat was Loren’s emphasis on preparation. She doesn’t just walk into a room or jump onto a stage and start talking—she’s thoughtful and deliberate in her approach. She wants to truly connect with her audience, and she does that by understanding their cultural backgrounds, their unique needs, and how they view the world. It’s a reminder to all of us that cultural intelligence isn’t just about knowledge—it’s about strategy and preparation too.

If you’re interested in cultural intelligence, leadership, or even just hearing a powerful story of personal growth, you’ll love this episode. Loren’s journey is one of learning, reflecting, and ultimately using her experiences to lift others up. She’s a keynote speaker, an author, and soon-to-be PhD—someone who is actively making a difference in the lives of so many.

I’d love to hear your thoughts after you listen. Have you ever had to navigate different cultural worlds like Loren? How has your cultural identity shaped the way you approach your work or your goals? Until next time!Dawn’s story really resonated with me, and I think it will for many of you as well. At one point in her early career, she found herself asking, “What if I can only lead well the people who are more like me?” It’s one of those moments of self-doubt that many leaders—especially those working in diverse global environments—might relate to. Her honest reflection was, “I might as well pack my bags and go home!” But what’s truly inspiring is that she didn’t pack her bags. Instead, she dug deeper, expanded her cultural intelligence, and committed to learning how to lead people who were different from her.

In our conversation, Dawn shared some of the important shifts in thinking that have shaped her into the leader she is today. From her time working on the ground in Ethiopia to leading virtual volunteer boards and managing global teams as the Global Practice Leader at The Kaleidoscope Group, she’s developed a deep understanding of what it takes to lead across cultures and challenges.

We dove into three key areas that Dawn believes are critical for any leader looking to make an impact: empathy, vision, and depth. These aren’t just buzzwords for Dawn—they’re pillars of her leadership philosophy. Empathy allows her to see things from her team’s perspective, vision gives her the ability to lead with purpose and direction, and depth reminds her to keep growing and evolving as a leader.

I found it particularly interesting how Dawn highlighted the importance of increasing cultural intelligence—something that’s not just important for global leaders, but for all of us. Whether we’re leading a team at work, managing cross-cultural relationships, or even engaging in volunteer projects, understanding where others are coming from can truly elevate our ability to connect and lead.

I loved how practical our conversation felt, and I hope you will too. There’s something so empowering about hearing from someone who has faced the challenges of global leadership head-on, grown through them, and is now giving back to others. Dawn’s work with The Kaleidoscope Group is all about developing empowered leaders who can navigate the complexities of the modern world. If that sounds like something you’d like to learn more about, definitely reach out to her—she’s even offering a special discount on their Empowered Leadership Program for The Shift listeners!

So, whether you’re already in a leadership position or just starting to think about how to lead more effectively in diverse environments, there’s a lot to reflect on from this episode. Dawn’s journey is proof that we can all grow our skills, increase our cultural intelligence, and make meaningful impacts in the lives of those we lead.

I’d love to hear your thoughts—what leadership challenges are you currently facing? How have you grown as a leader over time? Let’s continue the conversation in the comments below or feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn.
