Episode 4: David Livermore - Part 2 -CQ Strategy - Where Shifts Happen

If you haven’t yet tuned into Part 1 of my podcast with David Livermore, you might want to check it out first. It’s packed with insights that set the stage for our deep dive in this latest episode. 🎧

In this episode, David and I explore how we can increase our Cultural Intelligence (CQ) Strategy by developing metacognitive awareness. Now, I know that sounds like a mouthful, but trust me, it’s fascinating stuff!

Ever since recording this episode, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting about reflection itself. 🤔 We often say we reflect on things, but how often do we do it with the discipline, honesty, and humility needed to truly learn and grow? And when it comes to understanding cultures and how our behavior impacts others, these qualities are absolutely essential.

David and I discuss several ways to enhance our metacognitive awareness. We touch on the power of reflection and journaling – not just any reflection, but one that suits your personal style and digs deep. We also talk about the unhelpful dogmas that can hold us back and the importance of finding what works best for you.

One of the key points we explore is the role of cultural interpreters and the significance of being aware of your own culture. Our gut responses are often shaped by our cultural backgrounds, and being mindful of this can greatly enhance our CQ. Experiencing another culture, whether through travel or by growing up in a different cultural setting, can also heighten our awareness.

David shares some practical tools that can help us in this journey. The Harvard Implicit Association Test (IAT) and a values inventory are great starting points. These tools can help us understand ourselves better and see how we come across to others. We also discuss the Five Whys – a powerful strategy for increasing awareness by digging deeper into our responses and behaviors.

Another fascinating aspect we discuss is perspective-taking, a concept highlighted by Adam Galinsky. David walks us through a perspective-taking exercise that can be incredibly eye-opening.

For those of you who are adapting to life overseas, I’ve created a guided journal called "Finding Home Abroad" to help you reflect and adapt. It’s available as an ebook, and I hope it can be a useful tool on your journey.

David also shares a personal story of shift that enhances our understanding of how we grow our metacognitive awareness in real-life situations. These personal anecdotes are not just insightful; they’re relatable and inspiring.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this episode! Do you make a practice of reflection? What have you learned about yourself and others through this process? How has it impacted your leadership, relationships, or Cultural Intelligence?

Let’s keep the conversation going. Share your insights and reflections – we’re all learning together.

Catch you soon,

Trisha
