Episode 5: Mariette Rups-Donnelly - An Actors Perspective on Moments of Shift

Have you ever wondered how actors manage to step into entirely different characters while still staying true to themselves? 🎭 In this week’s episode of The Shift, I had the pleasure of speaking with Mariette Rups-Donnelly, an incredible ‘triple threat’ – actor, singer, dancer, and now, a presentation coach who helps corporate clients enhance their presence and effectiveness.

Our conversation took a fascinating turn as we delved into the mental shifts actors make and how this can relate to our everyday lives, especially when navigating different cultures.

One thing that truly stood out to me was Mariette’s dedication to maintaining authenticity. She’s worked with many actors and corporate professionals, guiding them to bring their true selves into their presentations, even amidst the shifts they need to make. This really hit home for me, as I’ve had similar conversations with people I coach in Cultural Intelligence (CQ).

Often, when we shift between cultures, there’s a concern about losing our authentic selves. Mariette’s insights were invaluable here – she spoke about the importance of bringing our core selves into every shift we make, whether on stage or in a different cultural setting.

Reflecting on this, I recall numerous discussions with clients who worry about being authentic while adapting to new cultural environments. It’s a delicate balance – learning to change our behaviour to relate well to different cultures while staying true to who we are. Mariette beautifully articulated how actors bring their core selves into their work, and it’s a lesson that applies to all of us.

During our chat, Mariette and I explored how to identify what is core to who we are and where we can comfortably flex our behaviour. Sometimes, this comfort zone changes over time, but pushing it too soon can feel inauthentic and hinder relationship-building. If you’re feeling inauthentic, that can come across in your interactions and make connecting with others challenging.

I’d love to hear from you – have you experienced this in your journey to increase your CQ? Or maybe you’ve coached someone through it? Share your insights in the comments below; let’s learn from each other’s experiences.

This episode is part of The Shift podcast series, where we investigate how to grow our cultural metacognition and CQ. Mariette’s unique perspective as an actor and coach brings fresh insights into how we can navigate these shifts with authenticity and grace.

I can’t wait for you to listen to this episode and hear your thoughts!

Catch you soon,

Trisha
